Well, isn't this exciting- my very first blog post EVER! And I would like to announce it to the world, and to myself: Project Bach, Beethoven and Beer, in short, Project BBB!
Project BBB entails that I will be learning and revisiting complete Bach Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord (surprise!), BWV 1014-1019 and complete Beethoven Violin Sonatas. And I will explain later about the beer part...
I have always loved playing Bach - his music is purifying, extremely intelligent and timeless..I also love that everybody plays Bach with different and STRONG opinions! I really see that as a major sign of a truly gifted, one-of-a-kind composer. Anyways, I have played his solo sonatas dozens of times (thanks to many festival and school auditions...), but it was my FIRST time learning one of his sonatas for violin and harpsichord last year (on baroque violin)! And I really liked it...(duh), and I know it would be very worthwhile to learn them all (and probably on my modern violin, because it sounds...better).
On the contrary....I have always feared and refrained from playing the music of Beethoven, unless I was stuck in orchestra playing his symphonies (which I really loved playing btw!!! don't hate me..). For some reason, I always found it more enjoyable to listen to his music, rather than to play it - it always took so much attention and energy out of me. If Bach's music was soul-cleansing, Beethoven's music was soul-sucking.
So after a certain point, I started avoiding playing Beethoven violin sonatas altogether until my new teacher recently pointed out to me how weird and unbalanced my rep list looked, especially because I have not played most of the Beethoven violin sonatas (and he added, "at a doctoral level..!"). After facing his not-so-subtle-judgmental look in his eyes, I told myself I will finish learning all of the Beethoven violin sonatas until the end of my first year of DMA. WHOOT!
Hence, the game plan for Project BBB is: I will be giving 6-8 recitals/small performances in the next 12 months (wish me luck), and every concert will consist of some kind of a combination of 1 Bach, 1-2 Beethoven's and a contemporary piece inspired by these two giants. And I might throw in some old-school romantic piece, or a cheesy showpiece, or just cheese.
I am safely assuming that there are pianists (or other instrumentalists) and composers who are reading this post!
First of all, my dear composer folks - recommendations on Bach or Beethoven-inspired contemporary pieces (for small ensembles, preferably piano/violin, or solo violin), or...may I dare to suggest...write me/us a piece ;) ?
Secondly, my dear pianist folks, or even other instrumentalists, I need thy help! Please let me know if this project is something that could be of your interest and you would like to collaborate! If you have enjoyed making music with me, or somehow thought I was cool to play with despite of my rbf (resting b*tch face), or you love Bach and Beethoven, or you love beer (I will get to that soon) - I promise we will have a great time! The best scenario is if you are already a part of an institution, as a student/staff/faculty; that way we might have an easier time finding a venue and making the event happen. But also open to other suggestions!!
For those of you who are interested, please leave a comment below, or FB message me or email me at: email@example.com
OK, if you're still reading and were wondering WTF is up with the beer..
I really hate beer. Well, let me correct that - I hate most beer. Especially those IPA's really get me. So I never really bothered drinking them or trying them out until this past summer, when I discovered the most magical beer EVER (It was called something..cloud) in Aspen, CO. So, since then I have been more open-minded, but I never really go out of my way to drink or try one.
While this project is happening, I shall stay open-minded and try new beer every now and then. I haven't decided on how often - depends on my budget, health and circumstance... but for sure after every Project BBB concert! And everybody involved (who is also over 21) in the project will be getting free beer from me! Attention beer lovers! Please share thy wisdom and knowledge on beer, so that I know which ones to try first!
To conclude (phew), this project is really an excuse for me to play good music with my friends or friends-to-be, and have a good time! (and maybe to practice a bit harder...). And I am making this public so that I can be accountable and I actually follow through! I am already excited about this project :D Hopefully by October 2018, my repertoire list will be slightly more balanced, and I will have more friends, and an appreciation for fancy hipster beer!
Can't wait to hear from y'all!!
